Pure gold of victory in support of International Day of Sport

09.04.2018

It is the 5th year since the world started celebrating International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6. This event was established by the UN General Assembly in order to demonstrate sport’s abilities in development and consolidation of peace, as well as to create an atmosphere of mutual understanding and tolerance.

Shortly before the event a “White Card” promotional campaign (#WhiteCard) is launched in the internet. Its participants raise a white card demonstrating a positive strength of sport. Unlike red card which denotes a major violation of rules in sport, white card is a symbol of justice and peace.

For the third year Yelena Isinbayeva Charity Foundation organizes thematic events in support of this celebration. This year we organized a workshop led by Olga Akopian, Rio Olympic Champion in handball. The subject of the workshop was the following: “Magic of team victories. Example of Olympic victory of women’s national handball team.”

84 students from different social institutions of Volgograd region participated in the event.

Kate Kosolapova: “I really enjoyed the celebration. I’ve never heard about this sport before. I also gave correct answers at the quiz show and received a nice present. It is the second time that me and other students from “Lutchik” centre celebrate the International Day of Sport together with Yelena Isinbayeva fund.”

Olympic champion Olga Akopian: ”It was the first time to run a workshop and I saw that the children were really involved. I’d really like that after today’s meeting they will take interest in sport. Sport develops force of character, helps you to find friends in different countries and to fulfil your potential.”

Yelena Isinbayeva, two-time Olympic champion, member of” Champions for peace” club:” This day is a unique opportunity to remind everyone that sport has always contributed to peace in the world, to bringing nations together at least for the period of the sport event. This “White Card” is a symbol of purity, principles of sport, peace and mutual understanding. For me it is very important to be part of the movement in support of this idea.”

After the workshop Olga showed her gold medal of Olympic Games in Rio to the participants of the event and then they all took a photo holding with a white card. The fund’s partner BlinBerry restauration network served to all the participants its special meal. All over the world more than 500 events were held at the same time supporting the International Day of Sport.
